Giving kids a jump start

Move over World of Warcraft—educational software developer Knowledge Adventure, Torrance, Calif., is going 3-D next month with the launch of its new Jumpstart World personalized learning system for kindergarten, first and second graders. This fully developed, interactive world works hard to achieve an appearance and flow that mimic the fast-moving video game graphics that today's kids know all too well.
In Jumpstart World, kids earn badges, leadership keys or hero shields (based on level of learning) as they complete missions that aim to teach math, reading, spelling, vocabulary, science, art, critical thinking and social responsibility. Kids are also rewarded with creative activities and mini-games after each successful mission.
A game that grows
The system combines an initial software purchase with an ongoing subscription product online, which will offer each month assessment tools, progress reports and customization options to parents—everything from choosing which holidays and special events are celebrated in the world to which activities their kids can participate in.
Kids can choose a customizable avatar (which grows and ages as the child does) to roam and explore the world, and can tailor the game environment by adding pets, plants, artwork and even personal digital photos. The storyline of the game is one that drives kids forward, with a real-time calendar and constantly expanding territory to trek, all available with regular downloads via a broadband connection.
