George Wendt and John Ratzenburger, Norm and Cliff from the popular TV seriesCheers , won the right to a court hearing for their complaint against Viacom's Paramount Pictures over control of their characters. In 1993, the studio attempted to license out the characters for a set of robots to be placed inCheers-themed airport bars.
Supporters of the actors say that if they lose the case, actor's licenses cloaked in characters owned by studios could be used as advertising vehicles without the talent's consent.
