Scholastic plans books based on Discovery series

By Staff -- Playthings, 3/17/2010 8:57:00 AM

NEW YORK—Discovery Communications is expanding its publishing program by signing Scholastic to launch children’s books based on its properties.

The North American-based publishing deal will see Scholastic issue two children’s books, MythBusters Science Fair Book and Dogs 101, based on the series on Discovery Channel and Animal Planet, respectively.

In the MythBusters Science Fair Book, children ages 10 to 14 can help bust or confirm myths much like the hosts of the Discovery Channel series. The 128-page, full-color book will be available at retail in spring 2011.

Dogs 101 will highlight different dog breeds and feature fun facts on each breed including size and personality. The 64-page, full-color book for kids ages 6 to 10 will be available this summer 2010.

This relationship with Scholastic follows several other Discovery Communications publishing deals, including one with Meredith Corp. that saw the debut in January of a Dirty Jobs related children’s book, and a recently penned agreement with Bendon Publishing International for a line of children’s color and activity books.

The deal was brokered on behalf of Discovery and Animal Planet by its licensing agent, the Joester Loria Group.
