Second US Legoland to open in Florida

By Staff -- Playthings, 1/22/2010 8:16:00 AM

WINTER HAVEN, Fla.—Legoland will arrive in Florida in 2011, operator Merlin Entertainments said today.

Merlin plans to convert the fabled but now defunct Cypress Gardens theme park and botanical garden, first opened in 1936, into the second Legoland theme park in North America following the purchase of the 145 acre property investment firm Land South Group for an undisclosed sum.

When completed, the new park is expected to be the largest Legoland in the world. In line with Merlin’s “resort” strategy for its theme parks, the Florida park is likely to include both accommodation and the addition of further branded attractions from the Merlin portfolio. Its design will mirror the existing Legoland parks in Denmark, Germany, the UK and California. However, as with the other four, it will have localized elements to add “a Florida flavor” to the experience.

Merlin opened Legoland California in 1999. Visits to that park grew 6 percent in 2009, according to the company. Its other attractions in the U.S. include Sea Life Carlsbad; Madame Tussauds – New York, Hollywood, Las Vegas and Washington, D.C.; Legoland Discovery Centre Chicago; and the Underwater Adventures Aquarium in Minneapolis. Four more US attractions are also in development: Sea Life Phoenix; Legoland Discovery Centres in Dallas-Fort Worth and New Jersey; and the Pepsi Globe observation wheel in New Jersey.
