Broadway goes against grain
Dave Gerardi -- Playthings, 6/1/2002
This year may be rife with sequels and classic properties (Star Wars, Muppets, Dr. Seuss, to name a few), but at least one entertainment company aims to buck the trend.
"I believe in breaking properties," says Broadway Video Enterprises President Alex Drosin. "If we rely on traditional, well-known characters, we're not moving forward."
It's a challenge to find room in the ever-crowded children's consumer products market, but Drosin is confident in "finding the right partner with strong distribution relationships."
Drosin's first priority is getting the programs on the air and then building each property via home video. Ted's Bed, for ages 4 to 8, follows Ted and his magical bed which doubles as a transportation device taking him on exotic adventures. Gordon Giraffe, meanwhile, is a pre-school show focusing on thrill-seeking Gordon who doesn't quite jive with normally laid back giraffes.
