NEW YORK - The team of Amazon.com and Toysrus.com was an unbeatable combination during the just-concluded holiday season says a new ranking of the Christmas period's top e-tailers.According to the Nielsen/NetRatings Holiday E-Commerce Index, the Amazon/TRU.com juggernaut steamrolled the online competition, attracting nearly six times the number of online shoppers as the nearest competitor, eToys. For the period from Nov. 5 to Dec. 24, Amazon/TRU.com received 122.9 million shopping visits. eToys, at No. 2 on the list, tallied 21.1 million shopping visits.
The Amazon/TRU.com combination was a prime example of the power of brick-and-mortar stores online, according to NetRatings' analysts, with 11 of the top 15 sites being the online versions of well-known pre-Internet retailers.
'Online shopping this season mirrored the trend for traditional retailers as the popularity of virtual department stores dominated other product categories,' said Sean Kaldor, NetRatings' vice president of e-commerce. 'Web consumers favored the huge selections and time saving offered by virtual department stores.'
Toy and children's entertainment-oriented Web sites in the top 15 list included online versions of stalwarts Walmart.com (No. 6, 18.0 million), JCPenney.com (No. 9, 14.4 million), Kmart's Bluelight.com (No. 12, 12.2 million) and Target.com (No. 15, 11.1 million).
The fastest growing online product category during the 2000 holiday season was specialty gifts, the study found. The segment's 264 percent growth during its peak week nearly doubled the performance of the toys and games category, which peaked on Dec. 3 with a 138 percent growth spurt compared to 1999.
