Crafts for boys

By Lauren Kellachan -- Playthings, 7/17/2002 9:30:00 AM

Retailers have historically been stymied in their search for arts and crafts activities that pique boys' interests but, by the same token, don't over think the gender issue.

Beyond drawing books and volcano building kits, there's more product out there that appeals to boys and satisfies parents' requests than ever before. Activities like Balitono's Collector's Box and Bug House Kits, Curiosity Kits' Easy Art Maker and Power Balls and Crunch Art by Hands On Toys are attracting the young male population. Some crossover attempts, however, have created consumer confusion. KidzQuest owner Pamela Colianni says manufacturers are now putting girls' images on traditional boy products, like science kits, and that has parents shying away from buying it for a boy.

Arts and crafts should be perceived as educational toys that recognize cognitive skills as well as creativity, says Jan Converse, manager of Clever Camel Toys. "There's a creative end, like in making a puppet or kaleidoscope, but the process applies to all children," she explains. "A cooking kit teaches measurement, sequential order and requires a little mathematical knowledge. Illustory, for example, is a neat item that enhances a child's reading and drawing skills. So we promote it all as a neutral category."

As long as there are moms, there will always be a push for arts and crafts activities for boys, but retailers warn that boy will be boys.

Be sure to watch for the August issue of Playthings magazine for more in-depth information about the arts and crafts category. Learn what's new in the way of products and how retailers are merchandising this hot category.
