Skill sets from Learning Resources

Teaching skills in a fun way is the Learning Resources way, beginning with Crossword Toss Phonics Game.

Letter recognition and word building are introduced by rolling the consonant and vowel cubes to form words in a crossword pattern. The more cubes used, the more that get tossed into a bucket for prizes and points. For the older player, Reading Rods Word For Word Phonics Word Building Game is played in a two-minute time limit. This fast-paced word building game features 112 color-coded Reading Rods, score pad and instructions.

Measuring Monkey teaches and reinforces measurement skills by using the spinner to move the monkeys up the tree. The first player to reach the top wins. Fraction concepts are part of Pizza Fraction Fun Game where pizza slices identify fraction denominations. The game includes 13 double-sided pizzas (one side shows fractions) and three double-sided spinners.

Pretend & Play for preschoolers debuts a plastic Tape Measure for little hands; Work Belt Tool Set with plastic hammer, saw, tape, wood board and battery-operated motorized drill for young builders; and a 19-piece Doctor Set complete with stethoscope, pager, forceps, bandages and cell phone for the young intern.

The Outdoor Antics brand will also include Dive Balls, a Magnet Dive Glove and an Aqua Light Mask among other neat pool toys.

Miffy and friends debut

New licensing deals with the popular Miffy and Friends will be announced at Toy Fair. Big Tent Entertainment is representing the property that has sold more than 80 million books worldwide.

The company will be announcing deals with Barnes & Noble Booksellers and the Noggin Network.

A new Miffy & Friends half-hour television series will debut on Nickelodeon's sister channel Noggin Network in April featuring the bunny character and her other animal friends. It will use 3-D animation in conjunction with the traditional stop motion puppet animation.

Getting Rad-ical

Radica and Girl Tech have a whole grouping of new battery operated handheld games.

For ages 8 and up, last year's popular Skannerz gets a promotion to Skannerz Commander, with 126 new monsters.

Expanding other categories, Radica has new versions of Wordhunt, Big Screen Solitaire, Big Screen Black Jack 21, Big Screen Poker, Sub Combat and Tank Combat. The card games have multiple versions of games on the same unit.

Radica's Girl Tech is releasing Barbie Scanimals Pet Rescue for young ladies five and up. Based on the Skannerz model, Scanimals will have girls finding lost pets hidden in UPC codes. Once recaptured, girls can nurse their animals back to health and even dress them.

RoseArt goes 'pop' art

There will be plenty of activities for boys and girls with RoseArt's new line of activity-based playsets featuring brands like Hot Wheels and Barbie.

The Hot Wheels Car Factory will include everything would-be auto makers will need to mold and detail eight Hot Wheels Cars, while Matchbox fans can battle fires and save the day with both a Matchbox Fire Truck Extruder playset, and Matchbox Mini Fire Truck Extruder Vehicle.

Afternoon tea, as well as some birthday cake or other light snacks will be available for those who wish to entertain with the Barbie Dough Tea Set, Barbie Figurine Cookie Cutters and Barbie Birthday Cake playset. The birthday set includes three cans of Fun Dough as well as cake mold, cutter and gift boxes. RoseArt also knows it is time to make the donuts with the Dunkin' Donuts Donut Maker Playset, which even includes a mini Dunkin' Donuts box and hat for children so kids will be ready with their own kitchen-based franchise.

New categories diversify clothes line

Sophia's, manufacturer of trendy and fashioned-oriented doll clothes, is continuing to pave the way in dressing the doll the customer already owns: the popular 18-inch doll and 15-inch baby doll, as well as 8-inch, 12-inch, 17-inch and 19-inch baby dolls.

Recent additions of boy/girl 15-inch twin baby dolls, has stimulated Sophia's to add four new co-ordinating outfits. The hard to find 23-inch doll clothes and shoes round out the company's extensive product line.

Furry Friends haven't been forgotten either. Sophia's offers seven outfits to fit a child's favorite stuffed creatures, such as Angelina Ballerina, Beanie Babies and Boyd's Bears.

Late last year, Sophia's delivered a new "fabric paper" doll series, which continues to expand on the "Best Friends Collection."

The series consists of Dress and Play Sets and Design and Play Kits.
