Museum quality.
That's probably one phrase that's the farthest thing from a toy retailer's mind when building a reputation. It's more like trying to build a fun-house reputation!
But how about a toy store having both reputations?
Well, that's the case for The Toy Shop of Concord, Mass., owned by David Hesel. Last year, the shop celebrated its 60th anniversary—a remarkable achievement for an independent toy retailer.
The directors of the distinguished Concord Museum thought so, too, and proposed a toy exhibit— a display of classic toys dating back to the 19th century—that honored the toy store's anniversary.
The four-month-long exhibit, entitled "Good Then, Good Always: Toys and Memories," was supported by toy companies, the Toy Industry Association and private individuals. The exhibit showcased over 100 old-time favorites.
Visitors young and old were able to compare and contrast their favorite toys, as old and new versions of some toys were on display. Of course, they were welcome to visit the vintage Toy Shop of Concord too, which had an additional anniversary celebration in the shop.
Museum guests were welcome to peruse through toy catalogs dating back to 1895, engage in a friendly game of toy trivia, play with modern versions of some 19th century toys and listen to comments made by experts in toy- and tot-related matters. Toy Shop guests were invited to shop! Indeed, the exhibition drew additional customers to the store.
