Toy Fair to remain in NYC, maybe indefinitely
The Toy Industry Association board of directors unanimously voted to keep the American International Toy Fair in New York City for years to come. This decision is based on the assumption that the TIA will be successful in relocating the tenants of the International Toy Center in New York City and obtaining the continuing cooperation of local officials and the operators of the Javits Center. TIA Chair Arnie Rubin explained the board's decision by noting that “New York City is the cultural and business capital of the world.”
The sights and sounds of ASTRA
Specialty retailers at the annual ASTRA (American Specialty Toy Retailers Association) convention in Orlando, Fla. swapped anecdotes and industry advice. Many of the retailers in attendance shared stories about how their businesses fared in the face of hurricanes last fall. Featured presenter, Jon Schallert, urged attendees to use their small business status to their advantage by making sure to emphasize the 'unique.' All of that—plus a Lifetime Achievement Award for John Lee—made this year's convention the place to be for specialty retailers.
'Buzz' from the Outdoor Fun Showcase
Despite the light floor traffic, exhibiting manufacturers generally reported that they were pleased with the sales at this recent event in Phoenix, Ariz. Even though the show was attended by top retailers like Wal-Mart, Target, Toys “R” Us, Kmart and Safeway, many felt that traffic might increase in the future if more manufacturers exhibited. Others contended that the smaller show was beneficial to buyers because it was easier to meet with more of the exhibitors.
