NEW YORK—Playthings.com staffers got an eyeful of fashion last night at the Barbie and Hot Wheels Fall 2005 Fashion show, sponsored by Mattel. The runway show—which took place at New York City’s Gotham Hall—showcased five new lines of kids’ fashion featuring Mattel’s Barbie and Hot Wheels licenses. The clothes went way beyond a simple iron-on transfer T-shirt, this stuff could easily be classified as "couture."
The event celebrated the licensing partnership between Mattel’s Barbie brand and the Benetton Group. The show signified the official U.S. Launch of the Barbie Loves Benetton line, which showcased a bunch of fashions inspired by different cities around the world. Other girls’ lines include: Barbie Autumn Bloom, Barbie Time For Fashion, and Barbie Mix it Up. And not to leave out the boys, Mattel also launched its new Hot Wheels line for boys. The line, inspired by extreme sports themes, was designed to reflect its tagline: "Hot Wheels—Faster than ever."
Before the show began, Mattel took a moment to award Smith and Brooks with a 2004 Worldwide Mattel Brands Licensing Awards Hall of Fame trophy—presented by Mattel’s president, Matthew Bousquette.
