TRU celebrates MLB Opening Day

WAYNE, N.J.—Toys “R” Us and Major League Baseball (MLB) Properties are partnering to celebrate the opening of the 2006 Major League Baseball season. Beginning this month, TRU stores will feature an expanded assortment of MLB merchandise in special front-of-store boutique shops. In April, select stores will also host personal appearances by MLB players so that they can meet and greet their fans.
The shops will feature a broad variety of baseball-related products including apparel and collectibles, video games, baseball cards, sporting goods and licensed MLB merchandise. The special shops will be promoted through mini-catalogs of the MLB merchandise available at TRU stores which will be distributed to fans at baseball parks around the country.
Howard Smith, Major League Baseball Properties’ senior vice president, licensing, says of the deal “through this partnership, Major League Baseball fans will be able to celebrate the arrival of Opening Day and their favorite team at a one-stop shop with all of the most exciting and interactive MLB licensed products.”
McFarlane Toys is also joining the celebration by selecting TRU as the exclusive home of its newest Sports Picks action figure line which will feature players like Alex Rodriguez, Jason Varitek and Jeff Kent. It will include exclusive 3-packs featuring some of the most popular players from the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees.
“This spring, our stores are truly the destination for official MLB merchandise, with an expanded assortment of trading cards, apparel and sporting equipment that help parents and kids ‘gear up’ for the 2006 season or take to the field themselves,” says John Barbour, TRU president.
