Next-gen alert!

By Staff -- Playthings, 4/1/2006

Sony is postponing the release of the PlayStation 3 next-generation console to November with a plan for the system to hit store shelves in North America, Japan and Europe simultaneously in time for Christmas.

According to a corporate statement, Sony has withheld the production of the system in order to finalize the copyright protection technology and other standards for the system's Blu-ray DVD disc, the PS3 format and next-gen video for the upcoming gadgets tied to the system.

The PlayStation 3 console can be used as a DVD player and can play previously released PlayStation and PlayStation 2 games, something Microsoft's next-gen counterpart does not offer.

Sony plans to ramp up production of its latest console to 1 million machines per month in time for its retail debut with a strong lineup of PS3 game titles in support.
