Mini Marthas Motivated to Mix and Match
Survey says: Tween girls dig decorating
By Nancy Zwiers -- Playthings, 1/1/2007
Girls are notorious for finding creative ways to express themselves, and decorating their bedrooms is no exception. A recent survey conducted by kid-focused marketing firm Funosophy Inc. asked 300 girls ages 9 to 11 about different things they might want to do to their rooms in the next year, from painting to accessorizing. Turns out, these girls are ready for a complete remodel!
The art of accessorizingGirls are ready to renovate. More than 40 percent of all girls surveyed were "very interested" in doing each of the room upgrades included in this survey. Topping their lists was getting new accessories like pillows, rugs, and curtains—a desire for which manufacturers of soft goods and decor-themed arts and craft kits should certainly take note. More than 50 percent of girls surveyed were also "very interested" in getting new wall decor (pictures, mirrors and posters) and furniture (chair, desk, etc). Age doesn't seem to factor into girls' preferences for types of room upgrades. In fact, girls ages 9 to 11 and those ages 12 to 14 were almost identical in their rankings and interest level when asked the types of upgrades that most interested them. Two notable exceptions were older girls' preferences for new bedspreads/comforters and tabletop accessories, such as lamps, picture frames and art objects.
Never too youngThe results are clear: Girls across the tween age spectrum are extremely interested in redecorating their rooms. Manufacturers of lifestyle products and decor craft kits targeting this age group should find a very receptive audience for their wares this year.
