Sony ramps up Spidey series

Licensing efforts underway

By Staff -- Playthings, 9/12/2007 9:41:00 AM

NEW YORK—Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures Television have increased their production commitment for the new The Spectacular Spider-Man animated television series from 13 half-hour episodes to 26.

The new series from Culver Entertainment, which follows Spidey's journey as a not-so-typical 16-year-old entering his junior year of high school, will premiere in early 2008 on Kids’ WB! on the CW Network. So far, Kids' WB! has commited to airing 13 episodes.

Spider-Man Merchandising—the limited partnership comprised of Marvel Entertainment and Sony Pictures Consumer Products that oversees licensing and merchandising activities—is currently in discussions with industry leaders in most major product categories as well as retailers.

"The launch of the new Spider-Man animated series is part of an aggressive strategy to continue to meet fans’ nearly insatiable demand for our world renowned webslinger," says Eric Rollman for Spider-Man Merchandising.

Robert Oswaks, EVP of marketing for Sony Pictures Television, adds, "Our new animated series has given us this wonderful opportunity to bring the next chapter of Spider-Man to life, both onscreen and in stores. The public has shown an immense commitment to this character, and we are dedicated to staying true to what has made Spider-Man a cultural phenomenon."
