RIVERSIDE, Calif.—A federal court has cleared the way for Mattel’s lawsuit against MGA Entertainment over rights to MGA’s Bratz doll design to proceed to trial.
On April 25, U.S. District Court Judge Stephen Larson agreed that Mattel had a valid case for claiming that a former designer, Carter Bryant, created the Bratz concept before leaving Mattel for MGA, and as such can claim rights to that work under the employment agreement Bryant was bound to at the time.
MGA denies the suit’s allegations. “The facts are on our side and we are confident we will prevail at trial," MGA CEO Isaac Larian said in a statement, according to Reuters.
A jury trial will begin on May 29.
