EPA fines Imperial Toy

By Staff -- Playthings, 8/19/2008 2:53:00 PM

LOS ANGELES—Imperial Toy has been fined approximately $66,000 by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency because the company’s Spray-A-String confetti string contained R-22, an ozone-depleting substance.

In May 2006, the EPA found that Imperial had sold 51,118 cans of the confetti string in 2005, and had offered  but had yet to sell an additional 97,920 cans in 2006. As part of this week’s settlement, Imperial agreed to destroy any existing stock of confetti string products containing ozone-depleting substances.

R-22 was a staple in products that contained a propellant or refrigerant for several decades, according to the EPA. Its sale or distribution was banned as part of the Clean Air Act.
