CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa.— Furniture retailer IKEA said this week it would donate a Euro to two children’s charities in return for every soft toy it sells at its stores worldwide in the run-up to Christmas.
IKEA will launch its 2008 Soft Toy Campaign on November 1. It will run through December 24. The program will see the Swedish furniture giant donate approximately $1.30 for every toy sold to UNICEF and Save the Children’s educational programs—16 projects in all—in 14 developing countries.
"The IKEA Soft Toy Campaign is a heart warming opportunity for holiday shoppers to give a memorable gift, at a low price, that gives back to support the quality of life for so many children," said Pernille Spiers-Lopez, president of IKEA US.
IKEA's soft toys retail for between $1.49 and $19.99.
Since 2003, IKEA’s soft toy sales have raised a total of $15 million for its partner charities. This year’s goal is to raise $6 million. Last year, IKEA’s US stores lead the retailer’s global effort with the highest soft toy sales. The result was a donation worth more than $500,000 from its American stores alone.
