TAGIE Awards honor best in design biz

CHICAGO—The debut TAGIE Toy and Game Inventors Awards honored recipients in three categories during a gala at the Toy and Game Inventors Expo on November 21.
The Toy and Game Inventor Award for Excellence in Toy Design went to Steve Rehkemper & Jeff Rehkemper, principals of Rekemper Invention & Design (Rehco). The duo’s credits include the Rubik’s Revolution (Techno Source), the 2007 TOTY Game of the Year, and Spin Master's Air Hogs Sky Patrol R/C helicopter, among others.
Also nominated in the Toy Design category were Bruce Lund, principal of Lund and Company Invention, and Aldric Saucier, the independent toy inventor and video game designer credited with devising Bakugan.
The award for Excellence in Game Design was given to Random Games & Toys’ Garry Donner and Michael Steer. The pair’s credits include Tumbling Monkeys (Mattel), Express Line (Hasbro), Buzz Word (Patch Products), Last Word (Buffalo Games), Hit the Deck (Fundex) and Chain Game (Out of the Box Publishing).
Also nominated in the Game Design category were Action Designs’ Richard Borg and independent toy and game inventor Matt Kirby.
The nod for Rising Star Inventor went to Toying With Games’ Joyce Johnson and Colleen McCarthy-Evans. Their credits include In a Pickle and Aunt Millie’s Millions (Gamewright), There’s a Fly in My Soup and Beeline with (Basic Concepts), and Pokemon Pokeball Flip, Be the Expert, Pandamania and Dig that Dinosaur (Pressman), as well as products for Dowling Magnets, Danawares and Alga.
Also nominated as Rising Stars were Joe Haus, independent toy and game inventor, and Smirk and Dagger Games’ Curt Covert and Justin Brunetto.
The Lifetime Achievement Award was given to Jeffrey Breslow of Big Monster Toys.
