NEW YORK—Marvel Entertainment has revamped the release schedule for self-produced movies that will see the company’s comic book characters featured in summer tent-pole pictures every year through 2012.
The move delays three Marvel Studios productions by a year, backing up what had been 2010 releases Thor and The First Avenger: Captain America to June 17 and July 22, 2011, respectively, and pushes The Avengers to May 4, 2012.
The decision is part of a release strategy “for an uninterrupted road to The Avengers,” according to the company. The Avengers is a multi-character movie set up by plotlines in Marvel’s Thor and Captain America films. It will reflect the first time individual superhero characters and story arcs will be inter-woven and culminate in a multi-character motion picture.
The company’s release date for Iron Man 2 remains May 7, 2010. Sony Pictures Entertainment will release Spider-Man 4 on May 6, 2011.
“This new schedule strongly sequences Marvel’s movie debut dates, big screen character introductions and momentum. It maximizes the visibility of our single character-focused films, leading to the highly anticipated release of the multi-character The Avengers film in 2012,” said David Maisel, Marvel Studios chairman.
