NEW YORK—Sesame Street, which celebrates its 40th anniversary this November, was honored with an Emmy Award for New Approaches—Daytime Entertainment, recognizing the use of new media. The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) announced the winner at the 36th Annual Daytime Entertainment Emmy Awards on Sunday, August 30th. Entries, judged online in their native format, were from over-the-air, cable, satellite and Internet broadcasters and assessed efforts for associated websites, webcasts and other forms of interactivity.
Sesame Street also won in three other categories: Best Directing in Children’s Television; Outstanding Performer in a Children’s Series (Kevin Clash as Elmo); and Best Costume Design. In addition, Sesame Street was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award.
“Sesame Street debuted on PBS in 1969,” said Terry Fitzpatrick, executive vice president, distribution, Sesame Workshop. “Forty years later, we continue to innovate in emerging media — garnering an honor for new media, a fact that ensures our future will be as bright and distinguished as our legacy.”
Sesame Workshop’s website, www.sesamestreet.org, is a major organizational initiative for the nonprofit. Completely free of charge, users can expect to find new 3-D interactive games and videos, including celebrity appearances, to accompany the series’ new season debuting November 10 on PBS.
Other highlights are its live action residents: Muppets greet kids upon arrival at the home page and guide them throughout their visit to the site. The live action component helps guide users by indicating what tabs are live and where kids can point and click whether it’s for games, videos, playlists, Muppets or “My Street,” a feature that allows parents and children to personalize their experience by saving their favorite videos and games for frequent access.
