PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla.—Veteran business journalist and frequent Playthings contributor Brent Felgner passed away from cancer on October 26.
Felgner began his association with Playthings in 2004, reporting primarily on financial topics and industry intrigue. His chronicling of Toys R Us’ mid-decade financial woes played the key role in Playthings receiving a Neal Award, business journalism's highest honor, in 2006.
“Brent was the consummate business journalist,” said Cliff Annicelli, Playthings’ editor-in-chief. “He was endlessly curious about the inner workings of the industries he covered, tenacious in getting to the bottom of an issue, and always fair in telling the story that resulted. Personally, he was also a wonderful person and someone I will always be honored to have considered a colleague.”
In addition to his efforts for Playthings, Felgner also contributed as a writer and editor to several other publications owned by Reed Business Information, including Home Textiles Today, Gifts & Decorative Accessories, TWICE, Broadcasting and Cable and Multichannel News.
It was at Home Textiles Today that Felgner met his future wife, Desiree Nunez, who at the time was the publication’s art director. In 1997, the pair formed their own graphic design and editorial services company, Gotham Media Works.
Felgner entered trade journalism as senior editor of Discount Store News (now Retailing Today) and later became editor of Tobacco & Candy News. Before beginning his business journalism career, Felgner spent time helping to run an early campaign for current New York Senator Chuck Schumer. He went on to work as a reporter for the Bergen Record newspaper in New Jersey, then as a reporter for a New Jersey radio station.
He is survived by his wife, his father, Hans; and his son, Scott.
