Retailers settle Calif. lead suit for $454K

By Staff -- Playthings, 11/6/2009 8:58:00 AM

LOS ANGELES—Target, Toys R Us and Kmart will pay a combined $454,000 to settle a lawsuit brought by California and Los Angeles government attorneys stemming from the 2007 lead-related toy recalls, the Los Angeles Times reported today.

"Our enforcement action will serve as a reminder to companies that they have a responsibility to make sure that children aren't exposed to harmful chemicals from their toys," said Harrison Pollak, a California deputy attorney general. "The settlement provides a remedy for past violations and makes it less likely that there will be future violations of lead standards."

Under the agreement Target would pay $210,000, Toys R Us would pay $175,000 and Kmart would pay $69,000 to settle the suit, the California attorney general's office told the newspaper.
