Jakks, Ty tapped for 'Chipmunks' sequel

CENTURY CITY, Calif.—Toymakers Jakks Pacific and Ty Inc. are among the companies signed on for merchandise based on next month’s Chipmunks movie, Alvin and The Chipmunks: The Squeakquel.
Traditional toy partners for the movie include Jakks Pacific as master toy licensee, experiential retailer Build-A-Bear Workshop for stuffable and pre-stuffed plush chipmunks with optional sound chips, and Ty Inc. for specialty items such as collectable beanie plush. Nanco will make plush for the amusement channel. FunKo will offer bobbleheads.
Interactive entertainment licensees include Majesco for video games for Nintendo’s Wii and DS due out next month, and Emerson Karaoke for a line of karaoke products to debut in 2010.
Other new licensees include American Marketing Enterprises for girls sleepwear, Harper Collins for storybooks, Bendon Publishing for color/activity and educational books for the US market and Canada, and Aquarius for posters, boxed puzzles and wall calendars.
Debuting in theaters on December 23, Alvin and The Chipmunks: The Squeakquel will star Ross Bagdasarian’s classic Chipmunk characters as well as new female Chipettes characters. It’s the follow up t0 2007’s Alvin and The Chipmunks, which earned more than $360 million in worldwide box office receipts.
“The success of the first Alvin and The Chipmunks film proved that this is a brand that continues to resonate with audiences more than 50 years after its creation,” said Robert Marick, EVP of Fox Licensing. “With the Squeakquel, we’re taking the property to the next level with The Chipettes, the female counterparts to Alvin and his gang. Our licensing program is going to match the enthusiasm and scope of this new addition.”
