Yo -Yo's Over New York or Why Not a National Toy Week?

September 19, 2008

Why don’t the World Yo-Yo Championships take place during February Toy Fair? That’s what I thought when I read in the New York Times about the 196 competitors who came from 20 countries to see who was the world’s greatest Yo-Yo’er.

In fact, why don’t all the toy championships take place during Toy Fair? It would be great for them (exposure to the New York Press, synergies with other events, tons of people who would come and watch) and great for Toy Nation. Think of the synergies that would be created and the press toys and play would receive.

I have been making the point, publicly and privately, that Toy Fair week could be more than a trade show.  It could be a great way to market the industry and the joy of play to consumers.  In fact, it could be the cornerstone of a National Toy Week.

Imagine the buzz we could create for the toy industry by having lots of toy events going on that week. Here are just a few championships that could move to New York during Fair:

Just as Super Bowl week has become about far more than the Super Bowl; National Toy Week could become an opportunity to create excitement for our industry, our consumers and our enthusiasts.

So, why not just invite these organizations to hold their events during the New York Toy Fair?  Maybe they’ll come.
