Sasha Obama, "First Kid"

January 19, 2009

There is a new kid in town and she has, without intending to, already had a major impact on the toy industry. Sasha Obama is not only the new kid in school, she is the new force of style in the toy industry.

Sasha arrived for her first day of school with an Uglydoll attached to her backpack and suddenly, there is a hot new fad taking off. Here is a sample of headlines:

“How Sasha Obama Triggered a Hot Washington Fad”

The Daily Beast, January 19, 2008

“Where to find an Uglydoll in Orlando”

The Orlando Parenting Examiner, January 18, 2009

“Sasha's dad has cool job, but pals will marvel at Uglydoll”

The Chicago Sun Times, January 6, 2009

To get a feeling for how all of this commotion got started take a look at how the nation’s newspaper of record, the Washington Post reported Sasha’s first day of school: “We can reliably report some details, such as: Sasha carried a JanSport Trans backpack with a camouflage pattern of pink, magenta, gray and white camouflage.  Attached to the backpack was a turquoise, three-eyed Uglydoll keychain.”

Tomorrow we swear in our new Commander-in-Chief, Barack Obama. The nation’s eyes will be glued to his every move. Tomorrow, Toy Nation, will be getting its new Commander-in-Chief as well, “First Kid” Sasha Obama. Believe me, Toy Nation is going to be paying a lot of attention.

Could there be a new lobby in Washington getting toys into the hands of Sasha and Melia? Let's hope not. We can better gain insight into what kids are into by letting them be independent and making their own choices.
