New Words and New Ideas
December 20, 2007

Schott’s Miscellany is one of those weird/fun books I love.  Written by Ben Schott, it’s a collection of interesting little facts.

This year’s edition has a section on new science, technology and Internet words.  Some of these lend themselves to our industry so I thought I would share them and my comments on them with you.

  • Exergaming – “the unlikely combination of computer games and exercising.”  Just ask Fisher Price about this one. They are having a huge year with “Smart Cycle”.
  • Meganiche – “based on the idea that because of the sheer scale of the web, even a relatively rococo subject area can attract significant web traffic.”  I think we are going to see more and more niche players in the toy industry who pick out one narrow segment and mine it.
  • Crowdsourcing – “where companies use the expertise and resources of the online community to solve a problem.”  Certainly is cheaper, and maybe more effective, than doing focus groups.
  • Witricity – “wireless electricity that could be used to power a laptop over a room-sized distance.”  What a great concept to be used with toys.
