Are you feeling butterflies in your stomach?
January 16, 2008

I was talking to a friend of mine who is a veteran of the toy industry.  She is very smart and very savvy so my ears perked up when she told me that lately she has been feeling butterflies about the toy industry.  All the talk of increases in pricing, currency fluctuations, new technology, moving production out of China, new safety protocols, etc. made her feel these butterflies.

I thought about it after the conversation and I don’t think that feeling she has is one of nervousness or anxiety about the future.  She is far too sharp for that.  I think what she is feeling is excitement.

It’s that feeling you get when you are about to go out in front of an audience and give a big speech or act out a part.  It’s opening night for a new era in the toy industry and we are all the stars.  How we do business is possibly going to change dramatically over the next few years.  There will be some losers but there are going to be even more winners.  Success will come to those who are able to read how things are changing and quickly adjust.  It will come to those who are able to take advantage of the new paradigms in logistics and operations.  It will come to those who grasp the new forms of technology.  Most of all, it will come to those who love change.

This new era in the toy industry is long overdue.  Get excited!
