Libraries Loves Board Games: Part II

April 16, 2009

The American Library Association has just released “The Librarians Guide to Gaming: An Online Toolkit for Building Gaming @ your library.” They’re not talking about video gaming (although they do get behind that as well.  They are talking about traditional board gaming.

Now when you go to  link for the Guide to Gaming, you may think that I am most excited about their being a picture of ME. Well, actually I am, but that is not why I am sending you there. It is because this website has a mother lode of great information on how libraries are aggressively promoting gaming.

Plan to spend some time working your way around the site as it is a veritable goldmine of information and news. And, in case you wonder how effective they are, check out what happened last November 15 when the ALA supported a National Gaming Day. On that day 617 libraries participated and a total of 14,184 people played board games.

The TIA, ASTRA, GAMA and every single board game company doing business in the US needs to get involved with the ALA and their commitment to gaming. It’s good for them and it’s good for us.

The link to Guide to Gaming appears to be broken.

The Toolkit is a tremendous resource! Our libraries are becoming community centers with many diverse activities. Last November 15th's National Gaming Day was made even more significant by Hasbro's very generous donation and shipment of a Pictureka game and Top Trump's donation of a card game to every public library in the US - all 16,541 of them! I was thrilled to be part of helping to make that happen as I am on the ALA's Games, Literacy and Libraries Ad Hoc Committee. It is a pleasure to work with such a forward thinking group of people, particularly since it benefits our industry greatly!
