Will North American Toy Companies Look to the Rest of the World for New Markets?
January 17, 2008
For those of you who are unfamiliar with the Hong Kong Toy Fair, there are really two fairs. One takes place on the Kowloon side of the harbor and is where American and Canadian toy companies show their products to American and Canadian toy retailers.
The other Hong Kong Toy Fair takes place on Hong Kong island in the convention center and it is where the rest of the world’s toy companies show their products to the rest of the world’s retailers. A few North American companies go over to the Hong Kong side but very few do.
Similarly, you will find very few North American toy companies and retailers attending the Nuremburg Toy Fair. Again, Nuremburg is where the rest of the world’s toy companies show their products to the rest of the world’s retailers.
With the American economy slowing down and with the US dollar undervalued and therefore primed for export, wouldn’t you think that North American toy manufacturers would be looking outside of the US to create new markets for their products? They should, but will they?
Yes, selling to other countries means doing your homework, investing some extra money and seeking out expertise. None of that matters, however, if North American companies don’t even show up.
