Toys for adults: New York Comic Con

April 20, 2008

I took a trip on Friday to the New York Comic Con to see what was happening in the world of toys for adults. I also must confess that part of what drew me was my childhood love of comics which I really don’t engage very much anymore (although I do like to occasionally catch up on what is going on with Green Lantern, Hawkman and The Atom.)

The San Diego Comic Con is the mega event but the New York show is getting bigger and better. A few toy companies were present. Some of those I saw were: Diamond Comics, Mattel, Tonner Doll, McFarlane Toys, Monogram International, and Wizards of the Coast, Upper Deck and Duncan YoYo. Toy industry familiar licensing sources were present as well: Nickelodeon, Marvel, New Line Cinema and PBS KIDS Go! to name a few.

As at the Virtual Worlds Conference, I would have like to have seen many more toy companies present. An industry with a customer base that keeps getting younger needs every consumer it can find.

There is a whole world out there of teens and adults who don’t want to give up their toys. If you make collectables by design or by accident  or if you license any character or brand that appeals to this grown up demographic then Comic Con is certainly one place to be.
