On my way to the Sino-U.S. Consumer Product Safety Summit
September 11, 2007
I am sitting here in Penn Station waiting for the Amtrak Acela train to take me to the (and this is the actual title) "2nd Biennial Sino-US Consumer Products Safety Summit; New Initiatives for Assuring the Safety of Consumer Products." This is the type of thing you read about in the news, on the Internet or on television so I decided to go and see for myself what happens when you get Chinese government officials, US government officials, US toy industry leaders and Chinese toy industry leaders in the same room at the same time.
This conference is not, however, just about toys. We are included in a group of four that includes such child friendly categories as fireworks, electrical cords and lighters. I guess it could have been worse; we could have been included in the same group with flamethrowers, shotguns and the atomic bomb.
It is to be held at the Department of Commerce and I have been told to be there an hour early for the security screening. It is Washington DC and it is September 11 so I guess safety will be the issue of the day in more ways than one.
More when I get there.
