Aqua Dots recall spreads to U.S.
By Staff -- Playthings,11/07/2007
TORONTO—Following yesterday’s announcement that original Aqua Dots manufacturer Moose Enterprises was recalling its line in Australia, Spin Master is requesting retailers in North America remove Aqua Dots products from their shelves.
This week Moose recalled its version of Aqua Dots—marketed in Australia as Bindeez—because of concerns over the chemical reaction that takes place if the craft kits’ beads are swallowed. According to the company, tests showed that some batches of beads were not produced according to its approved formula.
Spin Master said in a statement today that it is “working diligently to identify any shipments that could potentially be included in a recall by the CPSC and Canadian officials.” The company has not announced the number of Aqua Dots kits and refill sets affected by the recall.
Aqua Dots are sold in the U.S. at traditional retailers and by Spin Master’s Spin Direct division through direct response television campaigns and other direct-to-consumer means.

Oh my gosh! We saw the news last night and my husband and I just looked at each other. Since last month, we have been really concerned about our 4-year old daughter as my husband found her in an "absence" type of seizure. She was completely unresponsive for at least a half an hour. She vomited clear foam and did not know her name or ABCs for almost four hours after she snapped out of the unresponsive seizure. The ambulance came and took her to the ER. The doctors were unable to explain what was wrong and why this happened. However, looking back at that day, she was playing with aqua dots and I caught her putting them in her mouth to make them stick together. I told her to knock it off and thought nothing else about it until I heard the news.
I would bet that the aqua dots were to blame for the strange reaction she had last month. How scary!

The chemical's name is either gamma-butyrolactone or 1,4 butanediol, both of which are metabolyzed by the body into GHB. GHB has been implicated in a handful of rape cases which has earned it a reputation as a "date rape drug." However, it is primarily voluntarily ingested by users because low doses create a feeling of euphoria, which is why it is often referred to as "liquid ecstasy." The primary effect of ingestion is this euphoric feeling. Overdose can cause a coma-like sleep state that lasts 2-4 hours. It is highly addictive and dangerous, but it isn't really a "date rape drug" any more than any number of substances (including alcohol, which is probably the nation's leading "date rape drug").

I bought some Aqua Dots in June and July- are these being recalled as well or is it just more recent sales?

What can I do with the aqua dots that I have already purchased? Is there a way to return the recalled merchandise?

In reply to the Lady whose cat went crazy after eating the dots: it wouldn''t have been the dots that did it. The reaction from eating the dots when it''s metabolised is seizures and being paralysed. It is the same chemical found in date rape drugs. I think you''ve jsut got a crazy cat. :)

My cat was playing with the aqua dots that fell on the floor and we found she was eating them. She was acting quite crazy running and pouncing and just acting wild. She even bit my daughter which she never does. Guess now we know it was because of the dots. My daughter loves the aqua dots and is going to be sad she can no longer play with them. Better safe than sorry. I'm just glad it was not my daughter that ate them.

My son, who is 1. Ingested some of my daughters aqua dots a few days ago. I contacted poison control and was told that he would pass them and he did. I can not believe that just a few days later this is happening. I hope that there are no long term side affects. He is fine and had no effect but this is still deeply concerning.
