Rose Art’s ex-owners want it back

By Staff -- Playthings,03/04/2008

MENDHAM, N.J.—Lawrence and Jeffrey Rosen, the former owners of Rose Art Industries Inc., sent a letter to Mega Brands last month expressing an interest in buying back its RoseArt activity and stationery businesses, the two said today.

The Rosens sold Rose Art to Montreal-based Mega Brands in 2005 for $350 million. The company had operated independently for 80 years until the purchase. In its final year before the sale, Rose Art tallied sales of $285 million and a $43 million operating profit. At the time, Lawrence Rosen was named Mega's senior vice president and chief marketing officer and Jeffrey will be executive vice president. In addition, Lawrence Rosen joined Mega Bloks’ board of directors.

The value of the Rosens' offer was not announced.

Rose Art makes the "Super Tube" posters and are available at stores like Target, Joann, Ben Franklin, Fred Meyers and HobbyTown. I got these names directly from Rose Art corporate. The true test is finding a STORE that has them... I am working with both Target and Joann right now trying to find them!
I also spoke with the Doddle Art owner! There are no U.S. reatilers that carry them. The only way to acquire an original Doodle Art coloring poster is through their website (www.doodleart.ca). They are a Canadian company...2 must buy at least 2 and the shipping is a bit expensive...BUT YOU CAN GET THEM! Also, there are only 7 designs available.
Hope this helps! Once I get more info I will try to post it.

I don't know if anyone is still paying attention to this discussion.

I was introduced to the original Doddle Art brand coloring posters in 1974. I was hooked. When the Doddle Art brand was no longer available in the US I gave up coloring these wonderful intricate drawings.

Over the years I kept searching for comparable posters but found none. I don't like the flocked posters and will not by them.

A few days ago I read on another message thread to check www.dickblick.com. On that site I found the Hygloss color your own environmental posters. They are the closest I have seen to the original Doodle Art brand. I also ordered the Fibracolor markers, there are 100 markers in the set. The posters are 14.95. I looked at the posters on the Color Your Poster site and when I saw they were just like 7.00 or 8.00 I doubted the quality.

I am hoping I am pleased with the ones I found at Dick Blick.

I just did an online order for the posters at, www.youcolorposters.com. I looked for years for these posters and this is where I finally found them. Now I will sit back and wait for them to be sent..

Hobbytown USA carries the RoseArt line. They are national franchise and they have several designs available. Enjoy coloring fans.

I would love to see the original owners or SOMEONE buy the Rose Art line. There is a very large unfulfilled market now for giant, non-fuzzy, coloring posters. These are the ones that were once manufactured by Creative Ind./Western Graphics, their "Super-Tube" posters. Since Creative Ind. and DoodleArt Co. discontinued making the giant coloring posters, us adult "coloring-fanatics" are searching everywhere for these type of posters to color. Coloring books just don't fulfill this passion, though Dover makes great ones.
